The actual team is one of the most eloquent expressions of the growth and radical transformation that GEG - Gabinete de Estruturas e Geotecnia has known along its history, since it was established by the end of 1987. Currently formed by more than 70 people, among them design managers, civil and geotechnical engineers, geologists, CAD operators and administrative staff, GEG began its activity as a small consulting and design firm with only four people, among them its founders António Campos e Matos and José Vaz Pinto. Paulo Pimenta, a team-mate since the first hour, would join them in the year 2000 as an associate partner.
Today, with resident teams abroad, GEG is in conditions to get established in any point of the globe and to participate in projects of large scale and demand. GEG had its origin in a small apartment in Porto which had been converted to start a business that revealed to be one of the most promising, in the civil engineering domain, in contemporary Portugal.
During the first years, GEG was involved in the design of some buildings, working mainly with GALP, the office of the architects José Carlos Loureiro e Luís Pádua Ramos. GEG rapidly began to carry out railroad and roadway projects, participating in the large investment programs that took place in Portugal in the end of the 80's and beginning of the 90's, due to its entry in the European Union and the funds that were then provided. While developing design for the most important roadways of the country (A1 - Northern Highway, A3 - Porto-Valença Highway and A4 - Highway of "Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro"), GEG specialized itself in Railroad Geotechnics, endorsing the renovation and duplication of existing railroads, and assuring its risk assessment.
Therefore, no wonder that among GEG's major clients of that time, besides GALP and such renowned architects like Carlos Prata, Márcio Freitas, João Pedro Guimarães and Eloi Castro, we could find "Junta Autónoma das Estradas", nowadays named as "Estradas d Portugal" (Roads of Portugal), REFER - Rede Ferroviária Nacional (Portuguese National Railroads) and the City Council of Porto. As the most significant assignments that were developed during our first decade, we shall refer the following: the Texas Instruments facilities (Maia - Porto, 1988), Focor's headquarters (Porto, 1989), the Mota Galiza buildings (Porto, 1990), the viaducts for the A4 highway (1993-1994), a different set of assignments for the Douro, Minho and Leixões Railways (1994-1996), the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in "Leça da Palmeira" (Matosinhos, 1995) and some buildings designed for EXPO'98 World Exhibition (Lisbon, 1998).
